In buying suits, select the ones that are tailored nearest to your figure. If you’re a plus-size customer, wearing baggy and ill-fitting suits is not advisable. Baggy suits won’t make you look slimmer; they would only make you look unkempt and drab. Tight suits are a no-no either. Aside from constricting your movements, tight clothes make you look bulgy.

In selecting the piece that is best tailored for you, look at the lines from the shoulders to the hem. For jacket suits, the line from the outer shoulder side to the hem should form a semi-rigid line. The straight, rigid line will help create a slimmer, straighter figure. Don’t choose jacket suits that have bottoms flaired like a skirt; particularly for men, this cut look messy.

In terms of color, dark blue and black are more flattering to a big body than lighter colors. Don’t experiment with stripes even with very thin ones, stick with the bare and solid type. Silk is the best fabric for suits. If it’s too expensive for you, just try avoiding the shiny types of fabrics. Don’t wear double-breasted jackets; aside from the fact they belong to a far gone era, they will make you look wider.

The most important thing to remember is to stand erect and straight. Your posture plays a major role in how you look. Even if you get all the clothes right, if you don’t have the correct posture it would still not work. Besides, there is a certain appeal to people who carry themselves with confidence regardless of whether they are thin or not.
