How the Market for Large Size Clothes Attained Its Current StatusThe market for plus size clothing used to be an underserved sector; but thanks to the changing perception about full size figures, large size clothes have become more varied and better designed. An increased number of fashion designers and apparel manufacturers have finally given more attention to the market for bigger people and created clothing and other supplies specifically designed for this growing consumer segment. A few years ago, stylish large size clothes are very hard to find. Fashion is a word associated only with those wearing size 10 and below. Every fashion season, women with rail thin and willowy figures were seen traversing the catwalk and wearing the latest creations. Consumers who are size 14 and above are left to stare with envy at the fine fabrics and designs being paraded, without much hope of getting to wear such fine creations. This is not true anymore. Apart from the popularity of various celebrities who wear plus size clothes like Queen Latifah, Kirstie Alley and Camryn Manheim, the market for bigger clothes has also been helped by the worldwide problem of obesity. Added to that is the fact that members of the baby boom generation have reached their 50s and majority of them seemed to be overweight. The baby boomers account for a large part of the consumer market and most of them have the money to spend on clothes. Although the world has launched various efforts to fight obesity, it doesn’t mean that overweight people or big-boned individuals should be denied the enjoyment of dressing up. On the contrary, they should be encouraged to be fashionable and must be made to feel good about themselves. Fashion is not just about dressing up, it is also a highly influential factor in terms of self-esteem. The growth of the clothing market catering to bigger consumers has gone beyond offering casual clothes. Smart suits for large executives, evening wear for women and men, lingerie for women with full figures and even swimsuits for the not-so-thin are now available in most clothing stores. Online shopping sites serving large people have also increased in number, emphasizing the growing power of plus-size consumers. The market for large size clothes has become a billion dollar business primarily due to the growing number of overweight people around the world and the change in the perception that large size and fashion can never be correlated. With these factors, the market is predicted to continue its growth and both consumers and retailers are expected to benefit from this expansion. |
