Plus Size Clothes: Helping Large Men and Women Look and Feel Good

As more and more retailers are adding plus size clothes to their offerings, so-called ‘big-boned' men and women don't have to feel frustrated anymore in their desire to become fashionable.

It used to seem that the fashion world deliberately turned its back on overweight men and women. Just look at pictures or videos of fashion shows and all you could see were rail-thin models wearing clothes designed for people with similar body types. Most plus size clothes during those days were limited to dowdy selections that resembled curtains and sacks, and had designs that were unflattering to the full figure. Nowadays, largely because of the popularity of celebrities such as Camryn Manheim, Kirstie Alley, and Oprah Winfrey, more and more companies are offering trendy and hip plus size clothes.

The number of obese men and women has increased considerably over the past decades, and so have the number of companies that are recognizing the spending potential of this market. Consumer research has shown that about 20 percent of women in the United States are overweight and businesses are springing up to cater to these women's clothing needs. And not just for large women, either; plus size clothes of a wide variety of styles are also being made available to men and children as well. While the negative health effects of obesity have been documented, it doesn't hurt to have plus size fashions contribute to the self-esteem and morale of fat people.

Whether for work or for play, plus size fashions are increasingly going mainstream. Sport clothes for men and women leading active lifestyles are now in vogue, while power suits for the large executive look smart and snappy. Overweight people about to attend formal occasions also have lots of choices when it comes to clothing since both department stores and specialty stores devote a large amount of floor space to plus size evening wear that helps the wearer look and feel elegant. Also, the swimwear market has progressed rapidly when it comes to their offerings for the plus size market. It used to be that obese people had to make do with a shirt and shorts when they wanted to go swimming or else make do with swimsuits that had unflattering cuts or designs. These days, most swimwear companies create plus size bathing suits that bring out the best of full figures.

There's a saying that goes, "Fashion fades, style is eternal." Fashion trends indeed change, and the expansion of the plus size fashions market is a commendable thing. Overweight people are increasingly able to indulge their sartorial wishes through plus size clothes, and these also help them create or enhance their own personal sense of style. Everyone deserves the right to be able to look good and feel good about themselves, and plus size clothes contributes a lot to creating a positive image for overweight people, both for themselves and to others.
